Aerial Applicators fly in to Newton for Calibration
Commercial aerial applicators recently attended a spray plane calibration clinic at the Newton Airport. The clinic was run by Dr. Dennis Gardisser, a professor of Engineering at the University of Arkansas. Dr. Gardisser is a commercial pilot and owner of WRK of Arkansas, which holds spray plane calibration clinics throughout the United States.
How the testing works: A string is drawn across the testing area which tests the uniformity of the spray coverage pattern. Pilots make three passes over the string, which is changed after each pass. Prior to the 3rd pass, water sensitive cards are placed next to the string which are used to measure spray droplet size and application rate. Results are calculated on-site; any necessary adjustments are made to the plane's spray system and the pilots will then fly the test again. This process is repeated until the plane's spray system yields satisfactory results.
