Propane Safety—A Top Priority for You and New Century FS
By Jake Jacobs, New Century FS General Manager
You’re important to us, and we want to share some important propane tips to keep you safe. You can also find these tips in the “Propane Safety—It’s Up to You” booklet we supply to all of our propane customers. First, you need to know your propane system, which has four basic parts:
- A tank or cylinder equipped with a main shutoff valve. It’s important for you to know the location of this valve and learn how to shut it off in an emergency situation.
- One or more regulators, designed to reduce the pressure between the tank and your gas appliance(s).
- Gas piping to carry the propane to your appliance(s).
- Your gas appliance(s).
To keep your system working properly:
- NEVER hook up any LP gas appliance or other equipment on your own. This should be done by a qualified service professional.
- Have your LP gas installations inspected annually. Call us for a complete safety check of your LP gas installations and equipment.
- Keep combustibles such as curtains, paper, cleaning fluids, etc., away from any energy source, including gas and electric appliances, where they could cause a fire.
- If you smell LP gas, DO NOT turn anything on or off, and do not use the phone. Leave the premises immediately. Shut off the valve on your tank, and call New Century FS immediately at 888-488-3737. Do not reenter the premises until a qualified service person gives you permission.
- Replace your outdated regulators. This helps reduce problems and accidents associated with LP gas.
- Do not let your LP gas tank run empty. A leak check must be done to put your system back into service. This leak check could cost you a service charge.
- Anytime your supply of LP gas is interrupted, a leak check must be completed. Never put your system back into service yourself. Always have a qualified service professional complete a leak check.
- Install an LP gas detector and/or a combination LP gas and carbon dioxide detector.
- Have a B/C rated fire extinguisher readily available. Be sure it’s charged and that you and your family know how to use it.
If you have any questions about your propane system, call New Century FS at 888-488-3737, and we’ll put you in touch with your local New Century propane specialist. |
